John and Riley take an unapproved trip to Mexico.
This episode takes place during the Day of the Dead festival
in Mexico, placing it seemingly in the fall of 2008.
The title of this episode comes from the first line of dialog
spoken by Cromartie in
The Sarah Connor Chronicles in
"No One is Ever Safe". I
suppose it is sort of an homage to poor Cromartie, who "dies" in
this episode. The Terminator is later brought back with the
computer mind of John Henry in "Strange Things Happen at the One
Two Point".
This episode alternates scenes from the perspectives of Sarah,
Cameron, John, Ellison, Derek, and Cromartie.
Vivian (mentioned only, rented a cabana in Dejalo to the
Connors when John was a kid)
Didja Notice?
At 3:22 on the Blu-ray, the bottom shelf of the bookcase
behind Sarah in the Connor house has three
statues/candleholders of the Japanese "three wise monkeys"
in the "see no evil, hear no evil, speak no evil" positions.
Cromartie holds a
Glock
17 pistol against Sarah when he invades the Connor house.
Cameron claims that she and John used to talk about his
loneliness in the future.
John tells Riley that when he was a kid he lived in Mexico
for a year-and-a-half in a little village called Dejalo. He
and Riley take a day trip there in this episode. As far as I
can tell, this is a fictitious village.
John and Riley arrive in Dejalo for Dia de los Muertos,
"Day of the Dead", a Mexican holiday for remembering friends
and family who have died. Since the Spanish colonization of
the 1500s, it has tended to be celebrated around the same
time as the European All Hallows Eve (modern Halloween) date
of October 31. This would imply that this episode takes
place in 2008 since John celebrated his 16th birthday on
November 14, 2007 in the earlier episodes
"What He Beheld" and
"Samson & Delilah". At
the same time, it does not seem like nearly a year has past
in the storyline since those episodes!
When Riley was a little shocked after John told her he was
taking her to see the Mexican village he spent time in as a
kid, she has to apologize and explain that he just took her
by surprise. He responds, "Good. Because I booked the
honeymoon suite." It comes across as a joke at the moment, a
jab at Riley's sudden worry about convention which is
normally not her shtick at all. But later, in the village,
John and Riley are seen to be occupying a somewhat shabby
motel room that has a Jacuzzi built into it, suggesting he
may actually have booked a "honeymoon suite" or the village
equivalent, a room meant for a couple's romantic stay. Riley
also refers to the room as a "honeymoon suite" when their
conversation turns awkward, "I'm sure we're not the only
couple that's found themselves in a honeymoon suite, and not
known the first thing about each other."
At the little restaurant John and Riley eat at, John speaks
Spanish with the waitress:
John: Podemos tener picante, por favor? ("Can we get
some hot sauce, please?")
Waitress: El verde? Es muy picante como fuego. ("The
green? It's very hot like fire.")
John: Si, exactamente. ("Yes, exactly.")
When John pays the photo taker at the restaurant, the man
says, "Gracias, joven." This is Spanish for "Thank
you, young man."
The photo taker refers to John as John Connor, son of Sarah
Connor, in front of Riley and she doesn't react, even though
she should only know him as John Baum. This is not a story
error and is a hint of who Riley is revealed to be in later
episodes.
When the photo taker recognizes John as Sarah Connor's son,
John says, "No se de quien estas hablando." This is
Spanish for "I don't know who you're talking about."
When John takes the photo taker aside and behind a beaded
curtain at 17:51 on the Blu-ray, notice that the back of
Riley's head can still be seen through the curtain in the
background where she's seated at the table. At 18:03, notice
that she gets up and walks to screen left, setting up her
sudden appearance seconds later when she snatches the camera
away from the man when he tries to blackmail John for the
photos.
The police officers who intervene in John and Riley's
dispute with the photo taker wear uniforms with shoulder
patches reading "Policia de Dejalo". This makes it seem that
Dejalo is probably a bit more than just a "village" as
described by John. It's possible that it was more of a
village when John was younger and has grown quite a bit
since then.
As John and Riley try to run from the restaurant after the
altercation, the waitress can be heard shouting, "Oye,
oye, oye! No se puede salir sin pagar!" This is Spanish
for "Hey, hey, hey! You cannot leave without paying!"
When John is taken to the local police station, he tells the
officer, "Puedo pagar la camara." This is Spanish
for "I can pay for the camera."
At 21:59 on the Blu-ray, the officer who Riley cons into
letting her out of the cell has the name badge "Munoz".
After knocking out the guard in the jail, John says, "Lo
siento, senor. Lo siento." This is Spanish for "I'm
sorry, sir. I'm sorry."
At 23:01 on the Blu-ray, Sarah sees a stack of papers on the
backseat floor of Cromartie's car. For some reason, there is
a 6th grade math test dated December 6, 2005 for a Flores
Gustavo.
Then, when Cromartie throws Sarah into the trunk of his Malibu SS,
there is a stuffed animal in it. These bits may suggest that
he stole the car from a parent who had a young daughter in
the 6th grade (though the 2005 date is odd!).
Cromartie tells Sarah that he found out where she and John
lived from the boy she let live at the bowling alley. This
is a reference to the teenage thieves in
"Brothers of Nablus".
At 26:51 on the Blu-ray, a fujitivo poster is seen
next to the police chief's desk. Fujitivo is
Spanish for "fugitive".
The sign on the police station, "Estacion de Policia,
Facilidad de Correcional de Dejalo", translates as
"Police Station, Correctional Facility of Dejalo".
During his assault in Dejalo, Cromartie uses both his Glock
17 and a
Heckler & Koch MP5K submachine gun.
John finds an
Ithaca
37 shotgun in Cromartie's car as he, Ellison, and Riley
escape from the Terminator's assault on the police station.
When Ellison stops the car at 30:30 on the Blu-ray, a sign
on a building in the background reads "Escuela Primeria
del Dejalo". This translates from Spanish as "Primary
School of Dejalo". Notice a couple of duck and zebra bouncy
playground rides are seen against the wall as well.
After our heroes take off in his Malibu, Cromartie
commandeers the police 1987
Chevrolet
Blazer to give chase.
Ellison tells Sarah he owed her one for the fire at
Silberman's cabin. Sarah saved him from the burning cabin
when Silberman tried to kill him in it in
"The Demon Hand".
In this episode, we see that the Connors have apparently
switched from the verbal "day's date" code to a push-button
code when calling each other. In
"The Mousetrap", Cromartie learned of Connors'
verbal "day's date" code, so it obviously had to be changed.
The decorated pick-up truck seen at 33:38 on the Blu-ray
appears to be a 1971
Ford
F-250.
Derek carries his
Beretta
92FS while he and Cameron search for John in Dejalo.
At 35:58 on the Blu-ray, an officer picks up a
Smith
& Wesson
Model 15 revolver, apparently the standard issue gun of the
Dejalo police force.
At 36:50 on the Blu-ray, Ellison's
2007
Chrysler
Sebring is seen parked outside the police station in Dejalo.
Derek and Sarah use Heckler & Koch MP5A2 submachine guns
against Cromartie after cornering him in the church.
The song that plays in Spanish on the soundtrack during the
Connors' assault on Cromartie is "La Llorona", a traditional
Mexican song about a jilted woman who drowned her own
children in a fit of despair and madness, then laments and
commits suicide.
Cameron uses a
Benelli
M1 Super 90 shotgun to take down Cromartie.
When Cromartie is dumped in to a grave at 39:49 on the
Blu-ray, his face is much less damaged than it was after his
fall in the church!
John appears to be wearing
Levi's
brand jeans as he helps to bury Cromartie's body, judging by
the red tag on the back pocket.
